Rajas Gunn:

Rajas Gunn is hyperactivity or selfish activity, it operates through longing. It brings in greed, insensitivity and restlessness. Questioning hyperactivity will bring us clarity through the power of right knowledge.

There are three major gunas or tendencies that govern the moods and thoughts of the body-mind-intellect mechanism. These are known as Rajas (over-activity), Tamas (inactivity) and Satva (neutral activity). In this blog we will explore the tendency or gunn of Rajas (over-activity).

We think that what “we think” is our choice; we think that we decide based on logic, our decisions are correct & well thought, but it’s not so. Have you observed that even in similar situations our behavior could vary? Why does this happen? This is because the gunas that we have in our body-mind mechanism influence our mind, our decisions, our emotions, in a big way. With the power of right knowledge, we will bring Clarity, we will see ‘what these gunas are? And how do they operate?’


Rajas Gunn: Cause of Motivation/ Action

Rajas guna is simply speaking selfish activity, Tamas guna is inactivity/ lethargy and Satva guna is either un-activity or noble activity. At any point in time, one of these three tendencies is dominant and it suppresses the remaining two. Some other time some other tendency is dominant. Let’s see, how do all these three tendencies operate?

At the deepest level, the effect that these tendencies have on us is that they limit our Consciousness into the body-mind mechanism. We keep operating through the body-mind mechanism at the mercy of how these three gunas operate or show up. How did these show up in us?

Symptoms of Rajas Gunn

Rajas gunn in a big way is hyperactivity or selfish activity. This particular gunn operates through longing, that triggers a continuous search within us. This becomes the core of Rajas gunn. 

When there is a longing there is a need to do something or the other – to fill the empty space of this longing. The mind then gets into “we have to do something”, “we have to keep ourselves busy”. We end up doing multiple activities at the same time. When we are so bent on filling this empty space with unconscious activities, we are under the influence of Rajas Gunn.

When we are in a situation and the longing has come up, we want to catch hold of whatever we see around us, and fill that longing with it. Say, for example, we see a Lamborghini around us, we would immediately feel like, “Oh! that’s a good car, I should have this. I want this”. Then, we would line up our activities to earn more money, get to a position where we can buy a Lamborghini. 

Had the longing not come up in this moment, because of some other gunn being dominant, we would probably not see the Lamborghini in this same way. Say, if we were lethargic at this moment, we would probably question if buying this car would make us happy? And that would merely be to support the lethargic tendency. Also, if a car in today’s world can fulfill this longing, imagine, what would happen if we were thrown back 200 years ago and we had the same longing at that point in time? There were no cars. In that case, something else would show up in the surrounding, say a horse or a house, or a castle or manor. We would want to fill our emptiness using any of these objects in our lives. So, the objects of our desire are incidental and are not necessarily going to fill the longing, and give us fulfillment. Under the influence of Rajas Gunn, we remain blinded to this fact, and engage in our hyper activities towards the objects available. This is how restlessness is a primary symptom of Rajas gunn being dominant.


Effects of Rajas Gunn

Rajas Gunn, triggers greed and insensitivity. Every activity further fuels the tendency – Rajas gunn, with more greed. We are increasing its appetite by giving it more attention & more energy. It’s a vicious cycle. This is how Rajas gunn invariably leads us into getting into a rat race. This increases greed as the appetite increases, and this increases insensitivity. When we are so focused on “I want this, I’ll do whatever it takes to achieve this”, it’s very difficult to be sensitive towards what the impact of my actions be, on the surroundings, on people around me? These are the flip sides of Rajas gunn. 

How to overcome Rajas Gunn?

On those lonely nights when you have felt tired of so much activity and have questioned yourself as to, “Where am I going with this? What am I up to? Is this even going to give me fulfillment? What’s the goal? Finally, why am I doing this?” Those are the moments; those are the windows in which you see through the hyperactivity of rajas gunn and question as to “Is there a way out of this?” But usually, by the time we wake up in the morning, this sense of contemplation is lost and we start operating through whatever gunn is dominant then. Those few moments of wisdom probably don’t take us far enough. We are surely tired of the restlessness, but are not sure how to build on the contemplation. This may be because of the lack of right guidance.

Now we have the right guidance, we have gained information on Rajas, it’s symptoms and effects. This information remains theoretical if just read and understood. To bring the benefit of this subject to our real life we now have to engage in the practical aspect. As we discussed, in the blog Maya: the illusion’, the tool we would use to bring a concept from intellectual understanding to experiential understanding is Observation. Without this experiential understanding we are left with no power to choose if we stay under the impact of Rajas or move out of it.

So then, observation, in the case of Rajas, needs to be around – how does it feel when Rajas is dominant? How does hyperactivity feel? How does my perspective change towards objects and things and towards myself? How do I see myself when I am in the climatic condition of Rajas? What are the thoughts that come up? What are the emotions that come up with this entire observation around Rajas? This will give great clarity on how the mechanism of Rajas operates to dominate us. Observe.
